Snoop Dogg was born in Long Beach, California, to Vernall Varnado and Beverly Broadus. His father left three months after his birth. He was named Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. after his stepfather, who he didn't have a strong connection with. He began rapping in sixth grade. As a teenager, he was involved in gang activity and frequently ran into legal trouble. He started selling drugs in his youth, but he always had a passion for music. He changed his stage name to Snoop Doggy Dogg when he began to pursue music more seriously, a moniker given to him by his mother due to his love for the Peanuts cartoon character Snoopy.
Snoop Dogg's career took off in the early 1990s after being discovered by Dr. Dre. His smooth flow and distinctive voice quickly gained him attention. *Doggystyle*, his debut album released in 1993, was an immediate success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and selling over 800,000 copies in its first week. The album solidified his place as a leading figure in the burgeoning G-funk subgenre of hip hop.
Throughout his career, Snoop Dogg has experimented with various musical styles, including reggae (as Snoop Lion), funk, and gospel. He's collaborated with a wide range of artists, from pop stars like Katy Perry to country musicians like Brad Paisley, demonstrating his versatility and appeal. His music often explores themes of street life, relationships, and personal experiences, always delivered with his signature laid-back delivery.
Beyond music, Snoop Dogg has built a successful career in acting, appearing in numerous films and television shows. He's also become a prominent figure in the business world, with ventures in cannabis, media, and technology. He is also known for his philanthropic work. His influence extends far beyond the realm of music, making him a cultural icon and a respected figure in the entertainment industry. He is celebrated for his ability to stay relevant through the decades, adapting to changing trends while maintaining his unique style. He remains a key figure in West Coast hip hop and a global ambassador for the genre.
